Shell Camera Case
Is there a case that I can put my camcorder in to film snowboarding?
I am getting an Hg20 soon and i want to know if there is some sort of shell or case that i can put my camera in while still allowing me to film.

As a hard drive based camcorder, the shocks and shaking of skiing may cause the camcorder to stop recording. This is a common problem with all hard drive based camcorders, not just the HG20. The drop sensor also keeps track of vibration and hard shaking. It is possible to deactivate the drop sensor, but then you run the risk of actually crashing the hard drive heads into the platter and turning that camcorder into trash. See the warnings on page 8 and 99.
We do not know where you will be skiing. High altitude will cause the hard drive heads to park - low air pressure is bad for HDDs. See page 9 for the warning.
Flash memory and miniDV tape based camcorders do not have these known vibration and altitude problems.
All electronic devices have an operating temperature range - in this case, including the battery. Refer to page 129 for the HG20's operating termperature ranges. The battery needs to be kept warm in order to work. Use of a PortaBrace Polar Mitten is strongly suggested.
You have a couple of options...
1) Use a hard case normally used for capturing video underwater. They are expensive. This is probably the best method for protection, but the cases are bigger and bulky. Some sort of warmer will be required for the battery to keep it operational.
2) Use a softcase (like those from Ewa-Marine). Some sort of warmer will be required for the battery to keep it operational.
3) A HDD based camcorder is a bad idea because of the known vibration and altitude problems. Flash memory or miniDV tape are better alternatives - even with these, some sort of warmer will be required for the battery to keep it operational. The Canon HV30 and HF10 are much more suitable alternatives. Personally, I would take the HV30 over any of them because of the miniDV tape storage media.
