There are a couple of things to consider about these two great cameras in order to make an intelligent decision about which one to purchase. They are similar in quite a few ways. Most notably, the image quality of either one is highly rated at every review site. You can print mammoth prints from either camera, considering the 12 megapixel resolution of the Rebel XSi or the 15 megapixel resolution of the Rebel T1i.
Many camera buyers are impressed with a difference of 3 megapixels, but in the case of the two Rebel cameras, 3 megapixels does not make a significant difference in either quality or print size. In this writer's opinion, the megapixel issue is not worth paying an extra $150 to get the T1i.
Both cameras have a 3" LCD screen. The Rebel T1i LCD has a resolution of 930,000 pixels while the Rebel XSi LCD has only 230,000 pixel resolution. The difference in LCD resolution gives the newer camera a distinct advantage in brighter light situations.
The major difference to consider is the image processor. Canon has upgraded the T1i to a DIGIC 4 processor while the XSi has a DIGIC III processor. There are some techy issues to consider here, but the difference between the two processors is that the newer processor works faster than the older one. This means that the Canon Rebel T1i is capable of taking HS Video because of the DIGIC 4 processor. The Canon Rebel XSi does not have video capability at all. While it is fairly obvious that the DSLR cameras of the future will all have video, the jury is split on whether the video quality of the T1i is "ready for prime time". Some reviews point out that the focus while zooming does not work as well as some of the digital compact point and shoot cameras. And a camcorder, which is dedicated to recording video, will do a much better job in that department.
One other thing worthy of mentioning is the difference in Creative Mode. This was not available in the older XSi. The reviewer at image-resource.com explains CA (creative mode) like this:
"Marked with a "CA" on the Mode dial, this mode is a cross between the Auto and Program modes. When set to CA mode, the Canon 50D allows the user to adjust the Flash, resolution, drive mode, and Picture Style. Setting aperture and exposure are converted to easier concepts of background blur (blurred or sharp), and exposure level (darker or brighter) with a slider that's adjusted with the Quick Control dial. The more complex exposure decisions remain under the Canon T1i's control in CA mode." Â
Your decision about whether you should buy the Canon Rebel XSi or the Canon Rebel T1i should be based on how much you value these differences. While video is a very cool feature, it will be improving in coming releases. It is possible to purchase a video camera with the $150 you would save by purchasing the XSi instead of the T1i. Or you could possibly buy an additional lens or a tripod. In either case, you will not be disappointed in your purchase of a Canon DSLR camera.
Many sites have reviewed the Canon Rebel Xsi and the Rebel T1i, including the review at digital-photographic-resources.com, where you can find more specs and information before you make your camera buying decision. For some great photographic images check out http://www.thewayeyeseeit.net
