LG is releasing yet another Windows Mobile based device; no surprise there. 2009 marks a very productive year in the realm of Windows Mobile as it is the prime operating system for LG. The LG GW550 is a nifty mobile phone with a full keyboard right up front. It looks, odd. The decision to use a full keyboard for the face of a phone is something akin to taking a dress style from the eighties; it is loud. It looks weird and it is very, very, very impractical.

There are various degrees of impracticality; this phone's input method takes the cake. Now, people might say that we are being a little harsh, actually, we are not. The main thing is, a full touch screen provide better input methods for any user as compared to a full keyboard, particularly a keyboard that has been squished into the face of a mobile phone.

As can be seen with other touch screen devices with full keyboards, the best lay outs are those with slide out keyboards on the side. This allows manufacturers to properly space the different keys to accommodate typing processes easily. For basic functions, just use a virtual keyboard from the touch screen without turning the mobile device sideways.

Obsessing about the lack of a touch screen is not going to get us anywhere. Anyway, the 550 does have a lot of positive things going for it. If you are used to using a front face keyboard like some people, then there should not be much that would stop you from actually being able to enjoy this mobile phone.

As said, this portable device runs on Windows Mobile; chances are this operating system will be upgraded to the upcoming Windows Mobile version 7 that is due pretty soon. Again, it does not look stylish at all, with the screen pushed into a tiny little 2.4 inches of space. You can still use it to view videos, browse the net and use the mobile without any problems, but if you are transferring from a larger touch screen mobile phone, then this is a pretty jarring experience.

The LG GW550 is packed with the following features: The screen is a 2.4 inch QVGA screen that can display up to a 240x320 resolution; that is a pretty sharp quality for a small screen. It runs Windows Mobile and has all the basic Windows goodies in it. The battery is pretty impressive too, at 1300mAh; you can expect this phone to have almost a month long standby time. Honestly, with that much battery power, you ought to be able to access a charger well before you ever hit the low battery status.

It will not connect you to Wireless LAN networks, which is quite unfortunate, so you will be relying on GPRS and HSDPA connections. It also has a dual stereo speaker, but chances are you will be using earphones instead (who uses the speakers on mobile phones anyway?). Lastly, it also has a 3 mega pixel camera. That is more than enough if you only plan to take simple photos. All in all, the GW550 is an odd package that is not for everyone.
