Can anyone help me get video off my Sony HDR-HC3 handycam to my MacbookPro?
Can anyone help me? I am having trouble getting video that I have recorded on my Sony HDR-HC3 video camera to my MacBook Pro? I have gone through about 3 different cables to connect my camera to my computer and nothing! I have recently acquired a multi end cable that has the 4 pin and 6 pin firewires on it. I tried connecting it to my computer and nothing happens...can anyone help? Does it need to be a "i.Link" cable? or can it just be any 4 pin to 6 pin connector?
** Thank you very much for your response. To answer your question....I am using Mac OS X Version 10.5.4. Will I need to codec that you mentioned? I have the regular iMovie that came on the computer, do I need to get a different program or will it still work?
It depends which MacBook Pro you are using.
The original MacBook Pros came with a 6-pin Firewire port. The newer ones come with a 9-pin Firewire800 port... so you need either a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable or a 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable. The HC3's DV port is ALWAYS a 4-pin firewire connector (and not USB).
When the camcorder is connected with the correct firewire cable, nothing will magically happen. The camcorder needs to be in "Play" or "VCR" mode and iMovieHD or FinalCut will import the video.
The other thing you did not tell us is what version OSX you are running. It is likely that you need to do a "custom installation" of the Apple Intermediate Codec. This can be done with the OSX system discs - it is a QuickTime component. Without it, neither iMovieHD nor FinalCut will understand what to do with the HDV format video.
"i.LINK" is merely Sony's implementation of firewire. They are the 4-pin to 4-pin firewire connections/cables (the power pins are removed).
++++++++++++
iMovieHD06 is the first version iMovie to deal with HDV when the Apple Intermediate Codec is properly installed. If your iMovie is older than this, then you need to upgrade. Presuming you are running iMovieHD06 or newer, the easiest way to know if it is already installed or not is to launch iMovie and create a new project. At the bottom of that window, there is a drop down that allows you to select either DV or DV widescreen... If AIC is properly installed, there will also be a selection for HDV. If the HDV selection is not there, then AIC is not installed.

I'm the "Web guy" at a small business, so, basically, anything transportable via the Internet becomes an entry on my to-do list. Earlier this year, the owner came to me, requesting testimonials for the website--video testimonials. And not just regular, old standard videos, but high-definition ones; and he wanted them "eh-sap." So off I marched to Best Buy with the boss's business card to pick up one of those newfangled, high-def shooting camcorders, the type that'll show sweat dripping over pimples on people's faces in tantalizing detail. "So this top-of-the-line Sony shoots in HD? And it picks up sweat drops and skin imperfections? Okay, I'll take it."
Little did I know that Sony's high-definition format is AVCHD, its m2ts files nearly impossible to work with natively, including in Sony's own professional editing software, Vegas. Makes perfect sense, right? What I figured out over the next couple weeks of fervent, headache-inducing search engine research and personal experimentation was a workflow for editing AVCHD, while maintaining the HD resolution. Let me help you avoid the pain: the following is my workflow in three easy-to-digest steps, including how I converted the footage with Nero 8 software, specifically with its Vision video editing tool.
Step 1: Shooting with Camcorder
I capture video with a Sony HDR-XR500V camcorder, the one I purchased from Best Buy on the boss man's black card--listed for $1300, but over $1400 at the register (thank you very much, 10.25% Chicago sales tax). Resolution is 1920x1080, shooting in 60i. Its 120GB hard disk drive allows for extended recording sessions and a completely digital workflow, which I wanted after dealing with a Canon HV20 and the mess of its MiniDV tapes. I transfer the footage through the provided Mini Plug to USB 2.0 cable, importing it with the also bundled PMB software.
Step 2: Converting with Nero
With the m2ts files stored on my 1TB Western Digital external hard drive--the files quickly ate up all the internal storage on my gimpy, two year-old laptop--I open up Nero 8 for the conversion. In Vision, Nero's editing application, I create a new movie project and import the files there. I make some very basic, obvious trims, so as not to unnecessarily lengthen the conversion process, and then click to export. Using the drop-down menus, I select MPEG-2 as the format and custom as the profile, clicking on the configure button to customize the settings: NTSC; 16:9 ratio; 1920x1088; 2-Pass VBR encoding. Lastly, I press export, after having selected the appropriate file folder on my external drive.
Step 3: Editing with Sony Vegas
I import the footage, now usable mpg files, into Sony Vegas Pro (version 8.0a, for me). As I learned from my search engine research, the template needs to be modified to produce high-definition, through the File, Properties menu selection: my default template is now HD 1080-60i (1920x1080, 29.970 fps). With the template set, I get right to editing my testimonial footage, making sure the client's mild case of adult acne is artfully framed and transitioned to and from. Once finished, I output: Render As from the menu, selecting from the drop-down Windows Media Video V9 (*.wmv)/8 mbps HD 1080-30p Video. About an hour and a half later (thank you very much, outdated laptop), my three-minute testimonial is ready for prime time on the website.
Well, almost ready. I upload the finished wmv file to my YouTube account; after it's initially processed, the HD version takes a little longer. Once available, I grab the embed code (after clicking the Play in HD option through the customize drop-down) and add it to the website, so visitors can see not a nice-sounding quotation, but a high-definition talking head--warts and all.
